Dairy Stray Voltage Testing & Fixes in Twin Falls County

Cows that balk at the parlor, hesitate at the waterer or let milk down unevenly can be telling you something about the electrical system. We trace stray voltage on dairy farms, correct on-farm wiring problems and work with the utility where the cause is outside your fence.

What it is

Stray voltage on a dairy, in plain English

Stray voltage is a small voltage that appears between metal surfaces an animal can touch at the same time — a stall, a waterer, a feed rail, the floor. It is not enough to be dangerous to people, but cows are sensitive to it.

It usually comes from current flowing on neutral and grounding paths instead of staying inside the wiring where it belongs. That current can come from the farm’s own wiring and equipment, from the utility’s neutral system, or both.

Common signs

What farmers notice first

  • Cows nervous or reluctant to enter the parlor or stalls.
  • Hesitation to drink from waterers or eat at feed rails.
  • Uneven or incomplete milk let-down.
  • Behavior that changes at certain times of day, when equipment starts or when the load on the system changes.

These signs can have other causes — feed, health, handling — so involve your veterinarian and herd advisors too. If the cause is electrical, we find it.

How we approach it

Find the source, then fix the source

01

Walk-through and history

We learn what you have seen, when, and where in the barn and parlor.

02

Testing

We measure voltages where animals make contact and trace current on grounding and neutral paths, with equipment on and off.

03

On-farm corrections

We repair wiring faults, correct bonding and grounding problems, balance loads and separate circuits that should not share paths.

04

Utility coordination

If the cause is on the utility’s system, we document it and work with Idaho Power or MVEC — see which utility serves you.

Fixing the whole system

Stray voltage problems often show up alongside aging or modified wiring. We can also upgrade parlor and barn systems — see dairy farm electrician — and install agricultural electrical upgrades, farm generators and transfer switches, and motor controls. Dairy emergencies are our highest dispatch priority: see emergency electrician.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is stray voltage dangerous to people?

The voltages involved are typically too small for people to feel, but electrical faults that cause stray voltage can also create real shock and fire hazards, so we treat any finding seriously.

Who is responsible — the farm or the utility?

It can be either, or both. That is why we test on the farm side first, correct what is ours to correct and document the rest for the utility.

Can you test while the herd is in the barn?

Testing is most useful when the equipment is running under normal conditions. We plan around your milking schedule.

Do I need to involve my vet?

Yes — a veterinarian and herd advisor can rule other causes in or out while we look at the electrical system.

Do you do dairy electrical upgrades too?
