Check These Things Before Calling an Electrician
- Is Idaho Power or MVEC down? Check idahopower.com/outages or call MVEC at (208) 324-2431 first.
- Is the main disconnect at the pivot closed? The padlock-style disconnect must be in the ON position.
- Are the control panel fuses intact? Open the panel and check the fuse block visually or with a multimeter.
- Has the motor overload relay tripped? Look for the manual reset button — push firmly, wait 5–10 minutes, retry.
- Does the control display show fault codes? Zimmatic and Valley control systems display codes identifying the issue — tell us the code when you call.
📞 Call Immediately If
You reset fuses or overloads and they trip immediately on retry — stop resetting. Repeated resets on a hard fault damage motors and control equipment. Call (208) 886-8454 — pivot emergencies dispatched immediately.
Blown Fuses — The Most Common Pivot Electrical Failure
Control panel fuses blow from lightning surges, motor overload, and ground faults. Key rule: never upsize a blown fuse to stop it from blowing — upsizing removes the protection the fuse provides. If fuses blow repeatedly, there’s a fault in the circuit requiring diagnosis.
Main Power Fuses vs Control Fuses
Main power fuses (Class J or T time-delay) protect the motor circuit. Control fuses (2–10A) protect the 120V/24V control circuit. A pivot that has power but won’t respond to control commands often has a blown control fuse — not a motor issue.
Failed Contactor — Second Most Common Failure
The main contactor connects 3-phase power to the motor when the control signals “run.” Signs of failure: control shows “running” but no current flows; clicking sound when start is commanded but motor doesn’t run; visible arcing or burning on contact faces. We carry replacement contactors for common Zimmatic and Valley configurations in our service trucks — contactor replacement in the field takes 20–45 minutes.
Tripped Motor Overload Relay
Common causes of overload trips in Twin Falls County: hard starting in cold weather; mechanical resistance (stiff span, damaged drive wheel, frozen gearbox); undersized overload relay; single-phasing (one of three power legs lost). If the overload trips immediately on reset, there’s an active fault — stop resetting and call us.
Ground Fault on Pivot Spans
A ground fault (power conductor contacting the grounded pivot frame) trips the main breaker or blows fuses immediately. Causes: wire chafing on truss structure; connector corrosion at span junction boxes; physical damage from equipment contact; aging insulation breakdown. Ground faults require a megger (insulation resistance tester) to trace. We bring a megger on every ground fault call and trace section-by-section from panel to end.
Utility-Side Issues
Low voltage from Idaho Power or MVEC — overloaded transformer, long service run — can prevent motor starting or cause overload trips. A single-phase condition (one 3-phase leg lost at the utility) prevents motor starting and requires a utility response. We can measure voltage at your pivot panel to confirm utility-side vs your-side issues before you call the utility.
FAQ
How quickly do you respond to center pivot emergencies in Twin Falls County?
Pivot emergency calls go to the front of our dispatch queue — our goal is a truck en route within the hour for Twin Falls County calls. We cover all of Magic Valley. Call (208) 886-8454 and tell us it’s a pivot emergency.
Do you carry Zimmatic and Valley parts in your trucks?
Yes. Common contactors, overload relays, and control fuses for Zimmatic and Valley systems. For Reinke and T-L, we source same-day through our supplier network. Tell us your pivot brand when you call so we bring the right parts on the first trip.
